The African swine fever (ASF) epidemic in Dong Nai became increasingly complex in September and October as more batches of pigs tested positive for ASF.
There were some positive cases on September 30 from testing carried out on a herd of 38 pigs at a CJ Vina Agri pig farm in Xuan Loc and numerous test samples came back positive from a herd of 50 pigs at Dolico Suoi Cao pig farm.
Local media reported on October 5 that some facilities had been allegedly collecting pigs that had been infected with ASF from other provinces and cities before transporting them to Dong Nai for slaughter and processing.
At Luong Huu Dien's pig collection facility, also known as Trang Dien Farm, in Xuan Loc district in Dong Nai, a batch of over 800 pigs arrived that had been collected from pig farms managed by renowned foreign-backed firms, including the aforementioned CJ Vina Agri in Khanh Hoa province and TapFa warehouse centre in Binh Duong province.
Several of these pigs were suspected to have been infected, with many of them weighing between 20kg to 50kg, below the usual market weight. The pigs reportedly looked weak, and several pig carcasses were said to be among the deliveries.
After samples were taken on October 6, many results reported positive for ASF.
All options on the table as livestock firms take on losses Livestock businesses in Vietnam are struggling with record low profits after a drop in both prices and demand. |
Hundreds of CJ Vina Agri pig farms in Dong Nai must be shut down The Dong Nai authorities have mandated that CJ Vina Agri and three other foreign-invested enterprises must temporarily suspend their collaborations with 328 outsourcing farms that have yet to complete environmental procedures. |
Crackdown may be ahead for pig farms With thousands of pig farms that violate environmental rules still leisurely operating production and breeding activities, stronger sanctions may be required. |
