An exhibition featuring Japan’s best-selling collection of photos of Mirai-chan, a little girl with chubby red cheeks, which is taken by Kotori Kawashima, is set to run in Hanoi from 18 Aug to 15 Sept.

The exhibition, which celebrates the Japan – Vietnam Friendship Year 2013, will open free at the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam, 27 Quang Trung, Hoan Kiem district. Its opening starts with the photographer’s talk at 4pm on 17 Aug.

In one year, young Japanese photographer Kotori Kawashima shot the “Mirai-chan” collection, which features portraits of the cuddly daughter of one of his friends in Niigata Prefecture, Japan.

Its appearance on the cover of the famous arts and culture magazine Brutus triggered a big sensation in Japan and “Mirai-chan” instantly became a hot topic among locals as an extremely adorable girl who conveys robust vitality and energy. “Mirai” in the title means “future” in Japanese and “chan” is a Japanese suffix added to the end of one’s name to indicate intimacy.

The young photographer thinks that the little girl possesses a lovable human nature which is universal for all individuals. He also contemplates about the future in the splendidly changing four seasons and Japanese traditional culture.

The photograph book “Mirai-chan” has sold remarkably well, with over 100,000 copies sold out since March 2011. The photograph exhibition “Mirai-chan” has been also enthusiastically embraced in several cities including Tokyo and Osaka in Japan, and was also taken to Thailand and Taiwan.
