We departed for Vung Tau coastal city during a gloomy morning in Saigon.

We knew we were not guaranteed some nice weather on our trip to the beach but we are young and full of optimism and knew we’d enjoy it regardless.

After three hours on the road, we could sense the sea salt in the air. A few moments later Vung Tau appeared as we smiled and jumped around in extreme excitement and keenness, knowing we’d have an amazing trip. I remember well at that time, the sky was crystal blue, scattered with some white clouds and the weather was really cool.

At 4 p.m. when the last rays of sun disappeared, everyone flocked to the beach to satisfy their craving for coolness after the midday heat. The fresh water, waves which were sometimes strong sometimes tender, made visitors cast away tetchiness, stresses and daily worries to relax in their own way.

After playing among the waves and swimming, we spoiled our stomachs with an abundant seafood dinner on the beach. The city at night was sparkling with stars in the sky in harmony with colorful lights of many boats, animated with noises and laughter of people walking along parks, rocky beaches and streets.

Now full, we moved to a café to sense earnestly the romantic scenery, the sea breeze and the flavor from the water.

The night came over the city, the streets became less busy, some people gathered at restaurants or bars, some came to the beach to make parties with friends. We, with a canvas sheet, some beer and grilled seafood, enjoyed the night and recalled memories of school days.

Welcoming the early morning at the lighthouse is a great option when the city is still sleeping in the mist, just before dawn.

First opened in 1862, and then rebuilt by the French in 1913, the lighthouse Vung Tau still retains its design and classic architecture.

The lighthouse has a cylindrical tower, painted white, 18 meters high, 3 meters diameter, inside a spiral staircase up to the top and near the entrance leading to an external balcony to take in the panoramic view of Vung Tau.

Our next stop was Bach Dinh (White Villa) located on the side of Lon mountain. It is an interesting destination which attracts many visitors. The villa was constructed by the French as a resort for the Governor-General of Indochina Paul Doumer. Visiting Bach Dinh, tourists will be impressed with the green color of trees, flowers, pure air and ancient color of the building. For more than 100 years, Bach Dinh still keeps its charming, luxurious and solemn character.

Another stop we could not miss in out itinerary was the Statue of Jesus on top of Small Mountain. It was built in 1972, 32m high, standing, facing the sea. We had to take care of a spiral staircase from the foot of the statue to the neck with 133 steps. At the top there are two balconies, each with enough room for six people standing around watching the city.

We left Vung Tau feeling exhilarated and promised to come back soon.
