The installation of the plant's production equipment and the initiation of a systems testing period is an important milestone as the site progresses towards its grand opening in the first half of 2025, marking the start of a months-long journey towards ensuring that the factory meets the high-quality and safety standards upheld at each of Lego Group’s manufacturing sites worldwide.
According to Jesper Hassellund Mikkelsen, senior vice president of Asia Operations and general manager of Lego Manufacturing Vietnam, the moulding machines and pre-pack lines being tested and calibrated at this new facility will be able to manufacture bricks with extreme precision – to 1/10th of a hair’s width.
"None of this would have been possible without the continued support of local authorities, partners, contractors and our own employees, who have been instrumental in helping us maintain positive momentum in our factory’s construction," Mikkelsen said.
The company intends to ramp up its workforce, which is on track to have doubled in 2024. A comprehensive training course that combines local on-the-job training with hands-on learning experiences at the company’s factories worldwide launched in August.
Several hundred employees are expected to participate in the course, which will continue through to early next year and will expose participants to a range of functions spanning moulding, packing, and more.
The new factory is designed to be the company’s most sustainable to date, with plans to reduce energy consumption and maximize the use of renewable energy. The company completed the installation of 12,400 rooftop solar panels in the third quarter this year, which are expected to generate an estimated 7.4 MWp, the equivalent of powering approximately 1,270 households annually.
"At Lego Group, sustainability is more than just a commitment; it’s woven into the very fabric of our business and our new factory. Just as Lego bricks are built to last and inspire creativity for generations, we want children to inherit a healthy planet. We’re determined to play our part in making that happen, and there’s no time to waste," said Mikkelsen. The new factory is part of the company’s strategy to expand its network to support long-term growth, shorten the supply chain, reduce its environmental impact, and locate production closer to major markets.
