Tien Phong Plastic: creating sustainable values for 65 years

What are the fundamental factors behind Tien Phong Plastic’s sustainable development over the past 65 years?

The pioneering spirit and continuous innovation are the most important foundation of our 65-year sustainable development journey. It is the spirit of daring to think, do, and try things no one has done before, even during challenging periods.

Starting out manufacturing simple products such as plastic slippers, pencil boxes, table tennis, and children's toys, Tien Phong Plastic has transformed its business model to manufacture technical plastic pipes, invest in modern equipment, and research new products for water supply and drainage infrastructure. Meanwhile, efforts are being made to develop corporate culture in the pursuit of substantive quality, integrity, responsibility, and sharing to create a seamless flow across generations of employees.

Throughout the years, Tien Phong Plastic has also fostered a pioneering spirit and continuous innovation across activities such as technology, management thinking, market access, human development, and corporate social responsibility (CSR). This has enabled the company to adapt to the changing business landscape while solidifying its pioneering position in Vietnam’s plastics industry.

What are the core strategic pillars driving Tien Phong Plastic's path to becoming a $1 billion enterprise by 2035?

We are committed to enhancing production capacity, upgrading technology, utilising automation, accelerating digital transformation, and optimising operational efficiency to improve quality and competitiveness. Priority is given to developing new product lines featuring superior features that are convenient for construction. This is coupled with researching pioneering products that shape market demands and meet the requirements of smart urban areas, high-tech agriculture, and green infrastructure. Additionally, we are expanding our presence in international markets. Tien Phong Plastic’s products are exported to discerning markets such as Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Germany, alongside trademark protection in China, Myanmar, and Thailand.

A lot of focus is given to human resource development, especially the successive team with comprehensive management capacity, innovative spirit, and ability to integrate internationally. Moreover, the company associates economic growth with CSR activities. Therefore, we have adopted environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria in all activities with a view to creating values for the community and future generations.

What are the key focus areas of the company’s globalisation strategy?

Exports are one of the important strategic directions that Tien Phong Plastic is pursuing in this new phase of development. Our advantages lie in manufacturing capability, internationally compliant product quality, and more than 20 years of experience on the journey to conquer foreign markets. This is a solid foundation for Tien Phong Plastic to venture into the plastic industry regionally and globally.

Based on this foundation, we are actively collaborating with local and international research institutes to analyse consumer trends, technical standards, and policy orientation in the international markets. Efforts are made to step up research and development of new product lines that are competitive and meet the more sophisticated demand of global customers.

Along with product development, we also explore opportunities in new markets. We will collaborate with strategic partners to research the Ukrainian market ahead of the reconstruction phase when peace is restored. At the same time, we will increase our presence in Southeast Asian countries and more broadly in Asia. These markets share many similarities with Vietnam in terms of infrastructure and product demand.

In addition to increasing our export revenue, our goal is to gradually build the solid and trusted position of a Vietnamese brand in international markets, contributing to the development of Vietnam’s plastics industry in specific and the shared value of the region in general.

You have said that a company doesn't just create products, it can also shape the future. How do you translate this mindset into practice?

The beginning of Tien Phong Plastic was closely linked with the small plan movement of children in the North – a special mark carrying the ideal and the spirit of community responsibility. Stemming from this, we identify accompanying the development of young generations as an inseparable part of the company's mission.

As a result, Tien Phong Plastic’s CSR activities are geared towards the youth – the future owners of the country. Since 2017, we have implemented the 'Bridge of Love' initiative and built nearly 120 bridges across the underprivileged areas nationwide. Each bridge brings safety and convenience to children on the way to school and opens up new development opportunities to the community, contributing to improving the quality of life for many generations.

For me, 'shaping the future' is when a company becomes a part of the progress – contributing to economic growth, changing the mindset, elevating people, and preserving resources for future generations. To facilitate the goal, we adopt strict environmental standards in manufacturing, such as ISO 14001. This is coupled with strict control of water quality, emissions, and waste to ensure safety for the ecosystem.

In the pursuit of new orientation, Tien Phong Plastic has decided to invest in the education sector through the multi-functional, inter-level education complex VND1.16 trillion ($44.4 million) in Haiphong, which broke ground on April 21. This is not a change in direction, but a step following our pioneering spirit and sustainable values that we have always pursued.

Why does a manufacturing firm choose education as a strategic direction?

The Tien Phong Education Complex is an undertaking of special significance. The complex is implemented to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Haiphong Liberation Day and the 65th anniversary of Tien Phong Plastic. This marks a historical milestone while demonstrating our long-term dedication to the education field and the sustainable development of the city.

The initiative represents Tien Phong Plastic’s great passion with a view to creating an advanced, friendly, and innovative learning space. It is a place to foster learning and well-rounded development of young generations, empowering them to become global citizens in the future. We believe that investment in education will create a solid foundation for high-quality workforce development, contributing to elevating Haiphong and Vietnam on the regional and global map.

Many people associate the plastics industry with waste and environmental pollution. In a bid to combat that perception, Tien Phong Plastic, which supplies 100,000 tonnes of plastic to the market each year, is adopting several solutions to ensure a clean, green production process as it moves towards sustainable development.

While both domestic and foreign companies are making important changes towards greening their operations, Tien Phong Plastic JSC is also actively following that direction.
