Party, State leaders join voters in elections

Communist Party of Vietnam General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong was the first to cast a ballot at a polling station No. 3 at the Nguyen Du ward of the Hai Ba Trung precinct, Hanoi , at 7 am on May 22.

Having fulfilled a voter’s duty, the Party leader was instantly surrounded by reporters asking about the elections of the National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels.

Trong said it is the first time that citizens will vote for both the top legislative body and grassroots representative agencies on the same day, making it the biggest ever election so far.

He highlighted the entire nation’s careful preparations for the elections, marked with the active role played by citizens in nominating candidates and making recommendations to candidates’ programmes of action.

The Party leader recognised the candidates’ unprecedented campaigning efforts in the election preparations, saying “The candidates have held many meetings with voters in their election campaigns”.

“With a high sense of responsibilities, I hope that you all will make the right choice for the best of the best,” emphasised the Party General Secretary.

At polling station No. 38 in District No. 3, Ho Chi Minh City, State President Nguyen Minh Triet was also the first voter to cast his ballot at 7 am.

The State leader said he was happy to discharge his citizenship duty.

In the northern port city of Hai Phong, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and his wife cast the first ballots at polling station No. 3 in Ly Hoc commune, Vinh Bao district.

The PM said he believed that voters select virtuous and talented people, worthy of being representatives for the people who can undertake State affairs and engage in strengthening the NA to be really the highest body of State power representing the will and aspirations of the people.

On the same day, Truong Tan Sang, Politburo member and standing member of the Secretariat of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee, joined voters in Tan Dinh ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City to exercise his citizen rights.

He affirmed that the election day on May 22 is a specially important event of the country and a festive day of the whole nation and people as it takes place right in the first year when the country implements the Resolution of the 11 th National Party Congress with the goal of continuing the cause of industrialisation and modernisation in an effort to turn Vietnam into an industrialised country in 2020.

He emphasised the people’s wish to make State agencies really bodies of the people, by the people and for the people, especially the National Assembly with its extremely important role and position as the supreme State power organ.

Therefore, elected deputies should work hard to realise all their commitments with voters, accomplish their responsibilities to the people and fulfill its tasks, he said.

The May 22 election is the largest-ever so far with over 62 million voters who will elect 500 NA deputies and 301,954 representatives of People’s Council at all levels.
