The new 22-year-old male patient who is a Vietnamese citizen living in Hanoi, boarded Vietnam Airlines VN50 flight from London to Tan Son Nhat International Airport in HCM City on June 4.
His test result came back positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus on June 5 according to the City Center for Disease Control in HCM City. The patient is currently isolated to receive treatment at Cu Chi field hospital.
The nation has gone 51 days without recording any single fresh COVID-19 infection caused by community transmission.
Among 329 registered cases, 189 returned from abroad, and the remaining are infections in the community. On June 5, a further five novel coronavirus (COVID-19) patients were released from hospital, seeing the number of fully recovered patients rise to 307, accounting for 93.6 % of the total.
10 positive cases in treatment have confirmed negative for the virus in the first test, while three others’ second tests have come back negative. There have been no deaths due to COVID-19 in the country so far.
According to the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control, 9,088 people having close contact with confirmed patients or entering from pandemic-hit nations are being quarantined, including 72 at hospitals, 7,150 at concentrated quarantine establishments and 1,866 at home and places of residence.
Meanwhile, the nation’s most critical COVID-19 patient, a British pilot working for national carrier Vietnam Airlines, has regained 58% in lung function, compared to 40% a week ago and a mere 10% three weeks earlier.
He was disconnected from the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine (ECMO), a life support system on June 2 after 57 days of treatment, following signs of recovery. However, the patient’s condition was still severe and he is undergoing strict health monitoring.
