UNICEF Vietnam, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET), Vietnam National Innovation Centre, and STEAM for Vietnam, co-hosted a national forum on AI in education in Hanoi on May 30.

The forum marks a key milestone in the MoET’s plan to enhance digital and AI competencies for teachers and education managers to drive the national growth target of at least 8 per cent in 2025 and propel Vietnam towards high-income status.

“We should use AI in a proactive, independent, and intelligent manner without dependency and with a strong sense of ethicality,” shared Pham Ngoc Thuong, Deputy Minister of Education and Training. “Through these training and professional development processes, the ministry, in collaboration with UNICEF and other relevant organisations, will continue developing thematic content to implement an AI strategy in education.”

The plan also introduced initiatives such as a National Showcase Day to celebrate innovative educators and highlight best practices in digital transformation.

UNICEF Vietnam has been a long-standing strategic partner during the MoET’s digital transformation journey. Over the past four years, UNICEF has supported the development of the National AI Strategy for the Education Sector to 2035, digital competency frameworks for teachers and students, and AI skill-building initiatives for teachers, managers, and students.

UNICEF has also piloted AI-powered tools in classrooms, including assistive technologies for children with disabilities, gamified learning platforms, and AI-driven resources that promote inclusive and diverse teaching and learning.

“Through broad-based partnerships, including ed-tech organisations like STEAM for Vietnam and the Education Sector Group, UNICEF is supporting Vietnam in reimagining education through innovation,” said Silvia Danailov, UNICEF representative to Vietnam. “We are committed to ensuring that AI is used ethically, inclusively, and responsibly with a strong focus on equity, child protection, and digital wellbeing. Together, we can build an education system where every teacher is empowered, every student is prepared, and no child is left behind.”

Tran To Uyen, STEAM for Vietnam’s co-founder and country director, added, “AI is not just a supportive tool, but the key to unlocking the potential of every Vietnamese teacher. The success in Dien Bien, the first province to provide 100 per cent of teachers with free AI training, has demonstrated that, regardless of geography or social conditions, teachers can master technology and extend its benefits to millions of students. STEAM for Vietnam, together with other stakeholders, plans to scale this model, aiming to bring AI education to every teacher across the country.”

At the event, policymakers, educators, technology innovators, and development partners exchanged insights, best practices, and collaborative solutions for AI integration in education.

Key themes included global and national AI trends, Vietnam’s AI roadmap in education, perspectives from teachers, education managers, and experts on the real-world application of AI, and innovative AI-powered tools and solutions for teaching and learning.

The forum provided a timely opportunity for development partners, including United Nations agencies, embassies, the private sector, and others to affirm their commitment to Vietnam’s digital transformation and inclusive AI in education.
