Vietnam is rapidly adopting global innovations, particularly in the development of new drugs, vaccines, and cell-based products to enhance healthcare services and treatment outcomes.

Advanced medical equipment is being increasingly used to assist doctors in diagnosing previously difficult-to-detect conditions. These innovations in diagnostic tools, combined with cutting-edge treatment intervention techniques, are enabling healthcare professionals to surpass traditional limitations, thereby improving patient recovery rates and overall healthcare efficiency.

Robotics is playing an increasingly pivotal role in surgical procedures across the country. Meanwhile, advanced technologies such as AI and big data analytics are being applied in areas like diagnostic imaging, medical procedures, and pharmaceutical production.

Moreover, the digitalisation of healthcare is making significant strides. A growing number of online platforms and mobile applications now allow patients to consult doctors remotely, eliminating the need to visit hospitals in person. This transformation provides patients with the ability to manage their health via video calls, text messages, and mobile apps.

The introduction of electronic health records, along with the implementation of hospital data connection systems, is further streamlining healthcare management. These technologies are making healthcare operations more efficient, transparent, and user-friendly.

Collaboration is another focus area, with increasing attention being given to partnerships between research institutes, universities, and enterprises to promote innovation. However, despite the existence of many national research programmes, investment in research and development (R&D) remains limited. This has become a key barrier to innovation in the sector.

While Vietnam holds significant potential for health innovation, management and financial mechanisms have not fully incentivised scientific progress. The collaboration between scientists, universities, research institutes, and manufacturers remains underdeveloped and requires greater focus.

Globally, countries such as the United States, Germany, and Japan have robust R&D ecosystems, bolstered by substantial investments from both public and private sectors. These nations consistently push the boundaries of medical innovation due to their commitment to continuous investment in research. Additionally, they have established thriving startup ecosystems supported by venture capital, fostering new ideas and breakthroughs.

In Asia, countries like Singapore and South Korea have successfully built innovation systems in the medical and pharmaceutical industries. This has been achieved through supportive government policies, a focus on training high-quality human resources, and the rapid adoption of new technologies. These nations serve as valuable models for Vietnam as it seeks to grow its own healthcare innovation.

Vietnam is emerging as a large and attractive market due to its growing population, evolving healthcare infrastructure, and national health policies. As the country makes strides in improving access to healthcare services, it is drawing the attention of numerous multinational corporations eager to invest in advanced technologies such as AI, machine learning, telemedicine, and smart management software. These technologies aim to improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare services across the country. Moreover, many multinationals engage in technology transfer, human resource training, and capacity building for local partners, ensuring long-term benefits.

The healthcare and pharmaceutical industries are growing in importance, as socioeconomic development increases demand for higher-quality healthcare. The private healthcare sector, in particular, is seeing better conditions for development, creating a foundation for breakthrough innovation in healthcare.

To unlock the full potential of healthcare innovation in Vietnam, several key actions are required. Firstly, there must be stronger investment in R&D, particularly in the pharmaceutical sector. Increasing the state budget for R&D and creating a favourable environment for startups in this field is essential. Secondly, building a vibrant innovation ecosystem is crucial. This can be achieved by establishing innovation centres and encouraging deeper cooperation between universities, research institutes, and enterprises.

In addition, strengthening education and training will play a key role in promoting healthcare innovation. Providing professional training for healthcare workers in new technologies and enhancing innovation management skills will be crucial for development. The government also needs to continue implementing supportive policies, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises, to create a more conducive environment.

International cooperation is another critical aspect of Vietnam’s healthcare development. By partnering with leading universities and research institutes from around the world, Vietnam can improve its training programmes and elevate the personnel in the healthcare sector.

Vietnam should focus on building a robust R&D cooperation network, attracting international scientists, and developing academic exchange programmes. By fostering stronger international connections, Vietnam can ensure it remains at the forefront of medical innovation.
