The new routes are a realisation of an agreement signed between Vietnam Airlines and Jet Airways, India’s premier airline, in early September 2014.

As per the agreement, the two carriers will join together to allow passengers travel from either Indian city to Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi via the international gateways of Bangkok and Singapore.

Vietnam and India have pushed forward strategic trade and investment in recent time thanks to the signing of an FTA in 2010.

India is now a major importer of Vietnamese goods. According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnamese exports to India have grown steadily at an annual average of 46 per cent, which was a major factor in the increase of air traffic between the two nations.

Vietnam Airlines has also reported a rising number of Vietnamese tourists travelling to Buddhist pilgrimage sites in India. The opening of the new routes contributes to strengthening India’s Look East policy.

Jet Airways was established in 1992 and has a fleet of 115 aircraft at an average age of five years.

Jet offers more than 544 flights to 74 domestic and international destinations, including Asia, America and Europe.

Vietnam Airlines currently flies 94 routes to 21 domestic and 29 international destinations with a total 300 flights per day.

With its young fleet of 82 aircraft, Vietnam Airlines is expected to continue expanding its fleet with the newest Airbus and Boeing planes.
