The total number of transacting users on GoFood skyrocketed, with more consumers ordering online for the first time.

The number of users transacting on GoFood in Q1/2022 nearly doubled, as compared to the same period in 2021, with Hanoi witnessing outsized growth of 220 per cent.

Among them, the number of new users soared in both cities, with the increase in Hanoi at more than 160 per cent and Ho Chi Minh City at 80 per cent. Gojek also saw a double on-year increase in GoFood orders in the first three months of 2022, among which the number of orders in Hanoi surged by more than four times.

Dung Le, head of GoFood at Gojek Vietnam, said, “We have witnessed immense changes in the consumers' habits since the start of the pandemic, with more and more people turning to e-commerce activities, including online food delivery. This shift, together with the move towards cashless payments, is a continuing trend, indicating consumers' preference for convenience and priorities placed on health and safety.”

In addition, consumers are also transacting more frequently, with more breakfast and fewer late-night snack orders.

The frequency of ordering food online in Q1 2022 grew by over 20 per cent as compared to the same period in 2021. Out of Gojek’s millions of users, an average Gojek consumer placed an online food delivery order every five days in the first three months of 2022.

The first quarter also marked the highest uptick in breakfast orders, up 2.5 times, followed by afternoon snacks, lunch, and dinner, all of which almost doubled. Late-night snacks did not grow as fast, but orders still increased by more than 30 per cent on-year.

Among mealtimes, afternoon snacks, lunch, and dinner contributed the most to orders on GoFood, with each mealtime accounting for more or less a quarter of the total number of orders.

Furthermore, snacks continued to top online food delivery lists, and consumers are eating in groups more frequently. Specifically, milk tea continues to lead the list of the most ordered drinks on GoFood in both Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in 2022. Assorted flavoured tea and bubble yoghurt held second and third places respectively in both cities. Iced milk coffee entered the list of most ordered drinks on GoFood in both Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi for the first time.

The majority of the top ordered food on GoFood was authentic Vietnamese cuisine, such as chicken rice, spring rolls, vermicelli and noodles, among others. Interestingly, deep-fried tofu with rice noodles, a very popular dish of the North, ranked first among the most ordered food in Ho Chi Minh City in Q1 2022, while the most ordered food in Hanoi was Nha Trang grilled meat roll, followed by deep-fried tofu with rice noodle and Southern-style rice noodle with stir-fried beef.

Food combos and children's food were also in greater demand on GoFood, with orders for such combos increasing by 3.5 times on-year in the first quarter, implying that more people are eating together.

“Understanding these food consumption trends is vitally important and will allow us to better respond to the changing needs of consumers and support all members of our ecosystem. In addition to our efforts to diversify the food choices on GoFood, we are continuously exploring new initiatives and solutions to effectively connect our merchant partners with consumers to meet their daily needs,” Le said.

Gojek connects more than 200,000 motorbike driver-partners and tens of thousands of merchants to millions of consumers in Vietnam. GoFood is one of the country’s leading food delivery services offering more than a million dishes on-demand.
