The sum is part of the EU’s contributions to the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) which was established by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

The money will be allocated directly to more than 18,000 residents in flood-hardest hit areas in the Central Highlands provinces of Dak Lak and Lam Dong and the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang.

The aid packages include blankets, mosquito nets, kitchenware, water buckets and water purification powder.

In addition, cash will be provided for the most vulnerable families to help them buy necessities and stabilise their lives.

The EU and its member nations are the world’s biggest donors of humanitarian relief aid. Through the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), the EU has annually supported over 120 million victims of conflicts and natural disasters.
