"The biomass power plant will contribute to cutting CO2 emissions, ensuring energy stability and sustainability and creating jobs for local people," Erex chairman Honna Hitoshi said on Monday in a meeting with the local authorities.
He noted that Ha Tinh has great potential for project investment. Hopefully, the province will create better conditions for the company to research, survey and carry out related investment procedures.
The move is part of Erex's ongoing expansion in Vietnam. Specifically, the Japanese renewable energy company has plans to develop 14 biomass power plants in Vietnam with a total capacity of 1,060 MW.
The development sites for these projects are planned across 12 provinces. The ground-breaking ceremony for the plant in the northern province of Yen Bai was held in July. The company has proposed investment projects in biomass power plants in several other localities.
By ramping up its biomass footprint, Erex aims to tap into the energy conversion plan under the National Power Development Plan 8 (PDP8). The plan outlines that power plants that have been in operation for 20 or more years need to be converted to biomass or ammonia if there are price advantages.
Meanwhile, power plants that have been in operation for 40 or more years need to be shut down if the fuel cannot be converted. No fuel conversion is required for existing thermal power plants to be shut down in or before 2050.
According to Erex, Vietnam's bio-resources are abundant, but to make the conversion specified in the PDP8, it is necessary to promote the utilisation of bio-resources as soon as possible.
