The training course "Simulating Emission Reduction Policies and Emission Inventory by Zeroboard" was held in Hanoi on December 8, attracting the participation of 108 attendees in person and online.

This training programme, known for its practical approach, focused on exploring and applying tools and policies to achieve Vietnam's ambitious emission reduction goals amidst growing international climate change commitments.

Emission reduction policy simulation and inventory training

The course content ranged from simulating emission reduction policies in critical sectors, such as energy, agriculture, forestry and land use, waste management, and industrial processes, to introducing greenhouse gas inventory and management tools aligned with international standards.

The programme delved into Vietnam's enhanced emission reduction targets as outlined in the updated Nationally Determined Contributions in 2022, where unconditional reduction commitments rose from 9-15.8 per cent and conditional commitments surged from 27 to 43.5 per cent compared to the business-as-usual scenario. These targets align with the national strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Through in-depth content, participants gained a deeper understanding of implementing emission reduction measures, including the transition to environmentally friendly cooling technologies and compliance with the Global Methane Pledge.

A highlight of the course was the use of cutting-edge simulation tools, enabling attendees to practice strategies like carbon pricing, transport electrification, and sustainable agriculture enhancements.

Participants had the opportunity to assess real-world impacts of emission reduction policies on environmental factors such as temperature, air quality, and sea level rise, equipping them with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for designing, operating, and managing emissions trading systems.

The training offered a comprehensive exploration of carbon credit and offset mechanisms, covering traditional approaches like the Clean Development Mechanism and Joint Implementation, alongside voluntary market mechanisms.

Students participated in simulated carbon market trading exercises, gaining experience in portfolio management, market parameter evaluation, and stakeholder coordination to optimise both economic and environmental outcomes.

With the engagement of experts and representatives from high-emission industries such as steel, cement, and thermal power, the course served as a valuable platform for discussion, knowledge sharing, and updates on key policies, including Decision No. 13/2024/QD-TTg.

By the end of the training, participants acquired foundational knowledge and a comprehensive understanding of Net-Zero standards, the formulation and execution of greenhouse gas reduction plans, and the application of market-based solutions to promote green transition and sustainable development.

Supported by advanced tools and high-quality training materials, the course has significantly contributed to building a cohort of skilled professionals ready to support global efforts in combating climate change. The training was organised by IDEAS and sponsored by Dragon Capital, MUFG and VietinBank.

For students interested in advanced simulations of emission reduction policies and greenhouse gas inventories by industry and sector using IBM Envizi software, the next course will be held at 2pm on Wednesday, December 11 in Hanoi.
