British University Vietnam (BUV) inaugurated phase two of its 5-star campus on April 1, an initiative with a total projected investment of $165 million aimed at delivering accredited British education to thousands of students.

Construction of phase two began in August 2022 with a $33 million investment in Ecopark Township. Covering 16,300 square metres, the new facilities include a student hub, a food court, and more than 100 lecture halls and specialised classrooms. Together with the initial $52 million phase, BUV’s expanded $85 million campus will accommodate up to 5,500 students from Vietnam and abroad.

BUV also received EDGE Advanced Certification for phase two, following phase one’s certification in November 2024. As the first university in Vietnam to achieve EDGE status, BUV aims to become the country’s first zero-carbon university, targeting full operational carbon offset.

With only 20 per cent of the site built up, the campus reflects BUV’s commitment to green and open spaces–aligning with Ecopark’s vision as Asia’s leading sustainable township.

“The ongoing expansion of our 5-star campus underlines BUV's commitment to providing accredited British education, fostering purpose-based impact learning, and equipping students with essential skills to thrive in an ever-changing world. This milestone advances our vision for BUV to be viewed as the number one international university in Vietnam and the surrounding regions,” said Prof. Raymond Gordon, vice-chancellor and president of BUV.

Looking ahead, BUV plans to expand into phase three by 2028, increasing total student capacity to 10,000. The overall investment is projected at $165 million.

At the inauguration, Prof. Wendy Thomson, vice-chancellor of the University of London, announced that BUV has been elevated from a “Recognised Teaching Centre” to an “International Partner” within the university’s global network–an honour reserved for only a select few institutions.

"This recognition reflects our joint commitment to academic excellence and graduate achievements, and opens collaboration opportunities within our global network. It paves the way for research partnerships and knowledge exchange between Vietnam and the UK," she said.

The University of London has long been the awarding body for BUV, operating under the academic direction of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Recognised for its excellence, LSE ranks among the top 10 institutions globally in economics and econometrics, alongside Harvard, MIT, and Stanford, according to THE Rankings 2025. BUV remains the only university in Vietnam offering undergraduate degrees from the University of London.

British Ambassador Iain Frew also commended the development. “The inauguration not only enhances BUV’s academic offerings, but strengthens UK-Vietnam cooperation in education. It’s fantastic to see BUV become one of a few International Partners of the University of London–an accolade that underscores its quality and reputation,” he said.

Nguyen Tien Dung, deputy director general of the Department of International Cooperation under the Ministry of Education and Training, added, This event is particularly significant as the Vietnamese government promotes education internationalisation, attracts foreign investment, and encourages universities to meet international standards and train high-quality personnel.”
