Kicking off one of the nation's most important transport projects marks the first key event of the transport sector in 2021.
The ground-breaking event was attended by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, along with the Minister of Transport and Minister of Planning and Investment, as well as leaders of other ministries, agencies, and local authorities.
Lai Xuan Thanh, chairman of the Board of Directors of Airports Corporation Vietnam (ACV) – the investor of the project – said that the mine clearance has been done on 1,200 hectares. Moreover, ACV is also doing ground filling and building fencing walls to fast-track the project.
With the construction now underway, domestic private and international investors are able to work with the investor to join. So far, many showed strong interest in the project, including names from Sweden like Ericsson and ABB.

A senior official of the Ministry of Transport told VIR that international businesses are able to join projects related to services, repair and maintenance, catering services, hangars, and airport hotels at the Long Thanh airport project.
Covering a total area of more than 5,000ha, the airport has a total investment of $16.03 billion with the construction to be divided into three phases. In the first phase, costing $4.74 billion, one runway, taxiways, an apron, and a passenger terminal with other auxiliary works will be built to serve 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tonnes of cargo each year.
Once completed, the whole airport is expected to have four runways, four passenger terminals, and other auxiliary works to ensure a capacity of 100 million passengers and 5 million tonnes of cargo a year by 2040.
