Vietnam exports and imports on track to reach $29.3 billion in January

In the first month of 2017, Vietnam’s total value of exported and imported goods is about $29.3 billion - 13 per cent lower than in December 2016. 

According to the General Administration of Customs, in particular, the export value is $14.6 billion, and the import value is $14.7 billion. The deficit was $100 million, equivalent to 0.7 per cent of goods exported of the month.

The majority of exported goods are phones and accessories, textiles, computers, electronic products and components, footwear, machinery, tools, spare parts, and wood products, timber, marine products, vehicles and parts, coffee and crude oil.

Meanwhile, goods imported primarily contain machinery, equipment, tools and accessories, electronic products and components, fuel types, device types and parts, iron and steel, plastics materials data and other base metals, textile materials, garments, leather, shoes, chemicals.

In January, the imported amount of some important goods decreases compared to the previous month such as machinery, equipment, tools and parts, iron and steel, plastics materials, among others.

Since mid-December 2016 to mid-January 2017, the General Administration of Customs arrested 974 violation cases, in which the total value of infringing goods are estimated to be over VND10 billion ($470,000), contributing nearly VND9.3 million ($411.15 million) to the government budget.

On January 14, at Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat international airport, the Smuggling Investigation Department under the General Department of Customs together C47 of the Ministry of Public Security and other agencies arrested three people who illegally transport eight kilogrammes of methamphetamine, eight mobile phones and many other related documents.

On the same day, the anti-smuggling control teams from the southern area, Smuggling Investigation Department in collaboration with C46 under the Ministry of Public Security detained a container of an importing firm which was declared as the roof lights, but in facts containing more than 1,000 foreign wine barrels and 600 boxes of Ensure milk, whose value was about VND10 billion ($470,000).
