Vietnam approves scheme to intensify management of plastic waste by 2025
Plastic waste is damaging the environment and people’s health

Under the scheme, the country aims to completely switch to environmentally-friendly bags and packaging at trade centres and supermarkets by 2025 by replacing non- and hardly-disposable nylon bags, while collecting, reusing, recycling, and treating 85 per cent of the its plastic waste volume.

By 2025, the scheme also aims to reduce 50 per cent of plastic waste in the sea and ocean and by 100 per cent at tourism sites, and tourist lodgments. Hotels will also be required to say no to hardly-disposable nylon bags and single-use plastic products. Additionally, the country will make further efforts to reduce the production and daily use of hardly-disposable nylon bags and single-use plastic products.

Under the scheme, awareness of organs, organisations, businesses, and people about production, consumption, and elimination of plastic waste, hardly-disposable nylon bags, and single-use plastic products in daily use will be increased.

Accordingly, training activities and education programmes on the management of plastic waste and associated products, communication activities, and international cooperation in the management of plastic waste will be carried out to change local habits and adopt environmentally-friendly plastic products and alternatives.

Producers and distributors of hardly-disposable nylon bags and single-use plastic products will be encouraged to change to the production and distribution of environmentally-friendly ones.

The other focuses of the scheme are promoting research and application of technology in management and production of environmentally-friendly plastic products; using advanced technology in collection, recycling and treatment of plastic waste; and intensifying inspection and collection of environment protection tax for production and consumption of hardly-disposable nylon bags.
