He received 97.4 per cent of the total 487 votes.
The 62-year-old Sang, who is Vietnam’s seventh state president, replaced Nguyen Minh Triet, who held the position from June, 2006 to July 25, 2011.
Earlier, Sang was nominated for the post of new state president by the National Assembly’s newly elected Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung.
Before working as the Permanent Secretariat, Sang acted as head of the Central Economic Committee and general secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Communist Party.
Born on January 21, 1949 in southern Long An province, Sang has a university degree in law, and used to be head of the Central Economic Committee and the secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Communist Party Committee.
He has been the member of the 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th National Assemblies.
“I will closely combine with the National Assembly Standing Committee, the government, the Supreme People’s Court, Supreme People’s Procuracy, Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee, sectors and people to seek their advice,” Sang said.
After being elected, Sang nominated Nguyen Thi Doan, the incumbent deputy state president and Nguyen Tan Dung, the incumbent Prime Minister, for another term.
The voting for the new prime minister, the deputy president, and the heads of Supreme People's Court and Supreme People's Procuracy will take place on the afternoon of July 26.
The new State President also nominated Truong Hoa Binh, chief judge of the Supreme People’s Court, for another term. Nguyen Hoa Binh, a legislator from Quang Ngai province, was nominated to the post of the chairman of the Supreme People’s Procuracy.
