The elevated section of the Nhon-Hanoi metro line has finally been completed after nearly 15 years of construction, with commercial operations commencing on August 8.

Nguyen Cao Minh, director of Hanoi Metropolitan Railway Management Board (MRB), announced that the entire 8.5km elevated section from Nhon to Cau Giay stations had completed construction, installation, and trial operations.

Nhon-Hanoi metro line set to open on August 8

Starting August 8, the elevated section of the Nhon-Hanoi metro line will begin commercial operations. Trains will run from 5.30am to 10pm, with a frequency of 10 minutes at all elevated stations.

For the first 15 days, passengers will ride for free. The standard monthly pass is priced at $8, with a 50 per cent discount for students and industrial park workers. Group purchases of 30 or more tickets are available at $5.5 each. A day pass costs $1, allowing unlimited travel along the line. Single-journey fares range from 35 cents to 50 cents.

According to laodong.vn, Vu Hong Truong, CEO of Hanoi Metro, said that the company had received 10 trains, with plans to operate six. Staff will be flexibly managed between this line and the Cat Linh-Ha Dong line.

Unlike the Cat Linh-Ha Dong line, this route will use both card tickets and single-journey tokens (coin-like tickets). Passengers with single-journey tokens will use them to open gates at entry and exit points. Tickets are valid for 20 minutes after purchase.

Each train consists of four cars, with a capacity of 236 passengers each, totalling 944 passengers per trip.

The Hanoi Public Transport Management and Operation Centre has finalised plans to enhance connectivity with bus services. There are 36 bus routes operating along the metro line, with two transit hubs (Cau Giay and Nhon) featuring 32 bus stops. Currently, eight stations connect to the nearest bus stops within 0-50m.

According to Thai Ho Phuong, director of the Hanoi Public Transport Management and Operation Centre, the bus network effectively connects the Cat Linh - Ha Dong and Nhon - Hanoi metro lines. This facilitates passenger transfers between the two metro lines via bus. Specifically, nine bus routes connect the two metro lines, capable of meeting 15-30 per of the total travel demand along the routes.

The Nhon - Hanoi line runs on a dedicated track with a total main line length of 12.5km (8.5km elevated and about 4km underground). The route starts at Nhon, follows National Highway No.32 through Cau Dien and Mai Dich, intersects with Ring Road No.3, Cau Giay (intersection with Ring Road No.2), Kim Ma, Cat Linh, Quoc Tu Giam, and ends at the Hanoi railway station (on Tran Hung Dao street, in front of Hanoi Station).

Regarding the 4km underground section from stations S9 to S12, MRB leadership stated that construction is ongoing at all sites. The entire underground section is scheduled for completion in December 2027.

Once fully operational, the Nhon - Hanoi metro line will provide a modern, safe, rapid, and environmentally friendly public transport option. The line will help residents save time and travel costs, while connecting urban areas and facilitating green, sustainable socioeconomic development.
