The initiative was unveiled on November 11, coinciding with the upcoming celebration of 50 years of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and New Zealand.
For the February 2026 intake, the NZUA offers a total scholarship fund of nearly VND3.2 billion (over $133,000), providing 14 scholarships worth NZ$15,000 each. These scholarships are applicable to all eight of New Zealand’s universities: University of Auckland , Auckland University of Technology, University of Waikato, Massey University, Victoria University of Wellington, University of Canterbury, Lincoln University, and University of Otago. Applications are expected to open in May 2025, with further details to be announced soon.
Speaking at the scholarship launch in Ho Chi Minh City, Caroline Beresford, New Zealand’s Ambassador to Vietnam, highlighted the central role of education in the long-standing partnership between the two countries.
“This scholarship launch coincides with the upcoming celebration of 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries, marking a significant milestone. The provision of scholarships across all three levels underscores New Zealand's dedication and commitment to supporting Vietnamese students,” Beresford said.

The ambassador emphasised the transformative impact of education on Vietnamese students studying in New Zealand. “By offering these scholarships, we aim to create even more opportunities for students, enabling them to access high-quality education, unlock their potential, and future-proof their careers,” she added.
Beyond academic achievement, Beresford stressed the importance of these scholarships in fostering bilateral ties. “By participating in this programme, students will gain valuable skills and insights that they can bring back to contribute to Vietnam’s ongoing development. These scholarships strengthen the bonds between New Zealand and Vietnam, reinforcing our commitment to the Vietnamese community through meaningful and impactful educational
The NZUA programme complements other New Zealand scholarship initiatives tailored for Vietnamese students. These include the New Zealand Schools Scholarships (NZSS) for high school students in grades 8-10 and the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships for postgraduate studies. Together, these programmes provide a full spectrum of support for Vietnamese students across all education levels.
In addition to government-backed scholarships, New Zealand universities offer a variety of financial support options for Vietnamese students, with values ranging from NZD 5,000 to 35,000. Many institutions have introduced dual scholarships and pathway program funding, further enhancing opportunities for international students. Universities also focus on equipping students with job-search skills, career planning, and networking opportunities to boost employability.
New Zealand’s higher education system is globally renowned, with all eight universities ranked in the top 2 per cent worldwide, according to the QS World University Rankings 2025. The country also leads in sustainability, as recognised by the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2024. Notably, half of New Zealand’s universities hold the prestigious "Triple Crown" accreditation (AACSB, EQUIS, AMBA), an honour achieved by only 1 per cent of business schools globally.
Ben Burrowes, acting general manager of International at ENZ, highlighted the importance of the NZUA programme. “The inclusion of all New Zealand universities in the NZUA programme underscores our strong commitment to expanding learning and development opportunities for Vietnamese students at our world-leading institutions. This initiative also demonstrates New Zealand’s dedication to fostering bilateral educational ties as we approach the 50th anniversary of our partnership with Vietnam.”
New Zealand’s policies also offer significant post-graduation opportunities for international students. Graduates can stay and work in New Zealand for up to three years after earning a bachelor’s degree. Many international students gain valuable experience with New Zealand companies before advancing their careers in global markets or returning to Vietnam.
With the introduction of the NZUA programme, New Zealand solidifies its commitment to Vietnamese students and strengthens its educational ties with Vietnam. By investing in the academic and professional futures of Vietnamese students, the program not only enhances individual growth but also reinforces the shared vision of development and collaboration between the two nations.
