Phu Quoc Civil Construction Limited Liability Company held a ceremony on August 16 to commence construction of the Cat Ba Central Bay tourism and commercial service project, with a total investment of over $500 million.

Phu Quoc Civil Construction is a subsidiary of Sun Group, and the project is set to span 45.7 hectares in Cat Ba, Haiphong city.

Speaking at the ceremony, Le Khac Nam, Deputy Chairman of Haiphong People's Committee, emphasised the city's commitment to accelerating investment in infrastructure and facilities to bolster tourism development.

“To boost investment in infrastructure and facilities for tourism, several resort real estate projects are being launched in Cat Ba to transform the tourism landscape of the island district,” said Nam. “One of them is Cat Ba Central Bay.”

The project is expected to diversify tourism offerings, including supplementary services, entertainment, shopping centres, and conference facilities, aiming to attract tourists to the Cat Ba archipelago. Situated near the heart of Cat Ba town, the project envisions turning Cat Ba into a "mini Maldives of Asia", offering a premium, expansive entertainment hub. Over 60 per cent of the project will be allocated to public amenities, landscaping, and green spaces.

Aiming to make Cat Ba Vietnam's first carbon-neutral tourism island, the project will include an extensive electric transit network with well-placed stops, parking, and charging stations. Additionally, it will include a major inland port for easy maritime access from Haiphong and the Cat Hai cable car station.

According to Dang Minh Truong, chairman of the Board of Directors at Sun Group, Cat Ba Central Bay will be a comprehensively green project. “Environmental and ecological considerations have been integrated into every design aspect of the project,” said Truong.

“The project will focus on advanced waste and wastewater management, featuring seawater desalination and rainwater treatment systems. Wastewater will be filtered and reused for toilet flushing, while waste will be converted into fertiliser for landscaping," he added. "Additionally, it will enforce a ban on single-use plastics.”

Following the completion of the initial cable car route from Cat Hai to Phu Long, Sun Group is advancing the construction of a new cable car line connecting Phu Long to Cat Ba. This cable car will establish a direct link between Cat Hai and the heart of Cat Ba, enabling residents and tourists to transit easily, while significantly minimising environmental impacts.

“Upon completion of the entire cable car project, Sun Group is committed to offering free cable car rides to all island residents who pledge not to use carbon-emitting personal vehicles,” Truong said.

By prioritising green energy and environmental sustainability, Cat Ba Central Bay will set a benchmark for sustainable tourism. It is designed to improve ecological health and enhance the quality of life for residents, positioning Cat Ba as a leading ‘green’ tourism destination in line with planning.
