With a full month of New Year greetings and second chances on all those resolutions, the days between Christmas festivities all the way through to Tet celebrations are full of joy and colourful events, both in Vietnam and across the wider world. Plenty of foreigners living in Vietnam get to have their Christmas cake and eat it, with champagne or other fizzy delights to help count down and cheer in the New Year. It is especially eventful if the first day of the Lunar New Year comes early. It can seem like greetings of “Happy New Year” never ends.

Christmas and New Year festivities are celebrated in Hanoi and throughout the world each year

Christmas and New Year office parties are quickly followed by Tet parties. And if you’re lucky, just as you return from your little Christmas-slash-New Year jaunt, you will be off again for a more holidays as Vietnam shuts down for its traditional annual celebrations.

We celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of the next by watching the New York City countdown on television, the kisses at midnight in Paris, the champagne toasts in Sydney, and fireworks in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. These actions may be relatively commonplace across the continents.

But customs still vary widely in different cultures around the world. As we learn more about the various traditions around the world, we may discover cultural twists that seem foreign to us. These unique variations in the way people celebrate the New Year are part of what makes exploring the world so fascinating.
