The establishment of a sustainable welfare network is the urgent need and important step of ASEAN and East Asia’s development models, said Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.
PM Nguyen Tan Dung delivers his keynote speech at the ASEAN symposium on establishing sustainable social security net, Hanoi, October 26, 2010.

The Vietnamese government chief made the statement at the ASEAN symposium on establishing sustainable social security net which took place on Tuesday in Hanoi.

The event focused discussions on issues relating to Asian and global economy, the increase of middle-income class in Asia, Asia’s social security net and values, response to natural disasters, energy security and climate change.

The global financial crisis and economic downturn posed challenges against the international community’s balanced and sustainable development targets, torturing governments, especially in East Asia and ASEAN, to develop a sustainable security net, said PM Dung.

Besides, sustainable development requires proper solutions for issues of energy security, food, environment and other non-traditional security issues, the PM continued.

The reform efforts of each individual economy are not enough, pointed out PM Dung, calling on a coordination of policy making, enhanced cooperation and connectivity, regionally and internationally.

The social responsibilities of business communities and people become more meaningful to attain sustainable development.

The Vietnamese government chief hoped that delegates would propose concrete and pragmatic measures to establish a sustainable social security net for East Asia and ASEAN.

Speaking at the symposium, ASEAN general secretary Surin Pitsuwan stressed that an effective net should be developed so that ASEAN can become a firmly compassionate community and meet the requirements for ASEAN’s leading role in East Asia.- VGP
