90% of population to have health insurance by 2020

The Vietnam Social Insurance Corporation and the Ministry of Health on June 29 held a conference in Hanoi on the implementation of health insurance between 2016 and 2020.

Addressing the conference, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam reiterated the government’s goal of having 90% of Vietnam’s population covered by health insurance by 2020.

Dam called on insurance agencies to work closely with local authorities to realize this goal, paying particular attention to remote, mountainous, rural and poor areas. Localities were asked to distribute budgets to help near-poor households, fishermen and salt workers.

“I call for efforts to improve the quality of the insurance service by removing complicated administrative procedures. The health sector needs to strengthens the quality of health check-ups and treatments covered by insurance cards. It’s also important to publicise information on health insurance among the people," the Deputy PM said.

At the conference, the Vietnam Social Insurance Corporation and the Ministry of Health officially opened a health data portal and an information system on health insurance appraisal.
