>> Sang is new Vietnam president

The 13th National Assembly’s opening session has just voted the incumbent in for another five-year term.

The 62 year old, who received 94 per cent of total 500 votes, was nominated by newly elected state president Truong Tan Sang to continue functioning as prime minister.

After experiencing many posts in the army and in southern Kien Giang province’s leadership apparatus, Dung became deputy of Public Security in 1995 and member of Politburo in 1996. Between June, 1996 and August, 1997, he worked as head of the Central Economic Committee in charge of solving the Party’s financial problems.

From September, 1997 to June, 2006, Dung worked as permanent deputy prime minister and member of Politburo while taking on many other important tasks and posts. Between 1998 and 1999, Dung also worked as head of the State Bank.

Dung became the prime minister in July, 2006 and was Vietnam’s youngest prime minister. He is also head of many important committees such as Anti-Corruption, Education Council, Government’s Administrative Reform, and Construction of Socio-Economic Development Strategy 2011-2020.

During his term, Dung has recorded many successes in terms of the country’s external affairs. Five months after ascending his new post, he left a big stamp on the international arena with Vietnam’s successfully organising the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in November, 2011. In May, 2007, the World Business Magazine voted Dung as one of the 20 “Reform Characters” of Asia.

During Dung’s former term, Vietnam became a World Trade Organization member in 2007 and held the top position at the UN Security Council (2008-2009).

Also this afternoon, 60-year-old Nguyen Thi Doan, incumbent state vice president was reelected for another term position. She, who received 95.2 per cent of total 500 votes, is an economic professor and used to be rector of Hanoi University of Commerce (1993-1996). Between June, 1996 and July, 2007, Doan worked at the Central Examination Committee. She became state vice president in July, 2007.

Truong Hoa Binh and Nguyen Hoa Binh were also voted as chief judge of the Supreme People’s Court and chairman of the Supreme People’s Procuracy, respectively.

These three newly elected people were yesterday afternoon nominated by newly elected state president Sang for these positions.
