Residents on Cu Lao Cham Island to have national electricity by 2015
The power project will include 15.5 kilometres of submarine cable, 30 kilometres of lines on land and eight transmission stations which are scheduled for completion in 2015.
The total investment for the project is valued at around VND500 billion (US$23.5 million) with 50% sourced from the State budget and 50% funded by the national power group, Electricity of Vietnam (EVN).
Connecting the island with the national grid through submarine cable was seen as an optimal solution to an urgent problem which was expected to boost the socio-economic development of the island, as well as strengthening the national defence and security on the island.
Currently, local residents on the island have electricity only seven hours per day through diesel generators, which is costly and inadequate for the local needs of living and production.
