Vietnam's first automatic used cooking-oil collection machine launched

By integrating Flow Metric and AI technology into the collection and recycling process, this system optimises the handling of used cooking oil, reduces environmental pollution, promotes green living within communities, and contributes to the circular economy.

This innovative system, introduced in Vietnam, ensures transparency, efficiency, and precise resource management from residential areas. The advanced Flow Metric and AI technology from South Korea enables accurate collection monitoring and compliance with quality standards, minimises waste, and supports environmental protection.

Features like app-based tracking, data security, and user-friendly designs make the system accessible to a wide audience. Through its implementation, building operators, restaurants, and industrial kitchens can easily separate used cooking oil, optimise operational costs, maintain environmental hygiene, and demonstrate strong commitment to sustainable development in line with environmental, social, and governance criteria.

The project, implemented by the Vietnamese-Korean team at Eco Oil, is supported by Vinhomes, ReFeed, and relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. This partnership not only enhances business operational efficiency and raises residents' environmental awareness but also paves the way for sustainable green development within the circular economy.

Improper disposal of used cooking oil harms both the environment and public health. However, when recycled correctly, used oil can be transformed into biofuels like Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), a critical global initiative to combat climate change.

The aviation industry, a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, is actively pursuing SAF initiatives. The United States aims to increase SAF production to three billion gallons annually by 2030, while Europe targets 70 per cent SAF use by 2050. Similarly, Vietnam has committed to using 10 per cent sustainable fuel for short-haul flights by 2035 and fully transitioning to green energy by 2050.

“Eco Oil plays a key role in this green transition, collaborating with ReFeed to provide innovative solutions for collecting used cooking oil in Vietnam. By reducing the aviation industry's carbon footprint, Eco Oil contributes to the nation's sustainable goals. Vietnam’s 2020 Law on Environmental Protection also emphasises proper management of used cooking oil to advance the circular economy,” said You Jeonghwan, CEO and co-founder of Eco Oil.

At the launch event, South Korean Deputy Minister of Environment Ahn Se-Chang and Ta Thi Thanh Huyen, deputy general director of Operations at Vinhomes, highlighted the importance of green economic solutions.

Huyen said, “Vinhomes is truly impressed with the Green solutions implemented by ReFeed and Eco-oil. During the past, nearly a year, the companion programmes between Vinhomes and Eco-oil in urban areas have received positive responses from residents. The collection of used cooking oil not only contributes to reducing waste and developing renewable energy, but also significantly reduces CO2 emissions, contributing to the implementation of Vietnam's net-zero commitment.”

At the event, in addition to inaugurating the automatic used cooking oil collection machine, Eco Oil, in collaboration with the UNDP, launched a project for Vinschool students.

The initiative includes hands-on workshops where students are guided on how to properly collect and recycle used cooking oil, fostering awareness and practical skills for sustainable waste management.
