A group of cream-of-the-crop Vietnamese students have received the 2016 New Zealand ASEAN Scholarship to start off their post graduate studies in New Zealand this month, courtesy of the government of New Zealand.

The 30 excellent students are now part of the more than 200 Vietnamese students to receive the prestigious scholarship in recent years.

“I congratulate each of the 30 successful Vietnamese scholars. The New Zealand ASEAN Scholarship is an esteemed international award recognising academic excellence and is designed to support the next generation of leaders in Vietnam and the region,” said H.E Haike Manning, New Zealand Ambassador to Vietnam, during the pre-departure briefing and reception of the scholars on 8 January.

The successful scholars were selected from hundreds of applicants and will receive full tuition fees, airfares, living allowances, insurance and assistance with research and thesis costs during their time in New Zealand.

“New Zealand ASEAN Scholarship is a great opportunity for Vietnamese students wishing to earn highly valued and internationally recognised tertiary qualification,” added Manning. “Studying in New Zealand opens up new and exciting prospects and empowers individuals with the skills and qualifications to make a lasting contribution to the economic, social and political development of their country.”

“The scholars will return to Vietnam as proud New Zealand alumni and become great advocates and supporters of our efforts to further strengthen the excellent relationship between our countries.”

Education cooperation between Viet Nam and New Zealand is growing every year, with thousands of Vietnamese now receiving world-class New Zealand education, and many New Zealand institutions now offering joint partnership programmes to Vietnamese universities.

The New Zealand Embassy in Vietnam is currently receiving applications to study in New Zealand for the academic year 2017. The applications deadline is 30 April, 2016.

Applicants are encouraged to apply to study at courses where particular New Zealand expertise and the priorities of the Vietnamese government coincide, such as agricultural technology, disaster risk management, public sector management, and private sector development.

The New Zealand - ASEAN Scholarships award is a regional initiative providing assistance to post-graduate students for courses that align with the prioritised sectors of NZ and the ASEAN. 30 scholarships are available to Vietnamese students each year. Since 1994, 214 Vietnamese have received this prestigious New Zealand Government scholarship.
