NEU and Adelaide University enhance sustainability collaboration

Held on August 13, the event brought together representatives from universities, government agencies, and enterprises to promote joint initiatives and practical applications supporting Vietnam’s shift to a low-carbon economy. Part of a visit by Adelaide University’s senior leadership delegation to Vietnam, the seminar built on the success of last year’s offering and highlighted the role of academia, policymakers, and businesses in developing cross-sector solutions to help Vietnam achieve its net-zero emissions target by 2050.

The seminar introduced the latest research results and practical experiences from the two universities, which focus on climate-proofing futures – building adaptation and energy resilience; training in environmental technology and sustainable development; and the challenges and opportunities of climate change for sustainable futures in Vietnam.

One of the highlights was a panel discussion on practical initiatives and collaboration opportunities in Vietnam. These representations aimed to create a solid foundation for joint projects for national and regional sustainable development.

The 2025 course emphasises the importance of tripartite co-creation in addressing cross-sectoral challenges, with in-depth discussions on energy transition and a green education.

“Vietnam and Australia are entering a decisive phase of their green transition, aiming for net-zero emissions. This is not only a national challenge but also a shared challenge between Vietnam and Australia, as both countries are experiencing the significant impacts of climate change and are striving to build sustainable, resilient economies. It is therefore crucial for NEU and Adelaide University to work closely together in conducting interdisciplinary research, sharing knowledge, and connecting stakeholders from both nations' academia, policymakers, and businesses to co-develop innovative solutions with real-world impacts,” said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hieu, vice president of NEU.

“For many years, NEU has been a pioneer in Vietnam in offering training courses in environmental management, climate change, and urban studies. Currently, the two parties are developing a Bachelor's programme in environmental technology and sustainable development, with support and collaboration from international partners, including Adelaide University. This is a strategic step to train high-quality human resources who are ready to meet the urgent demands of the green transition and sustainable development,” he said.

According to Adelaide University, this university and NEU have several complementary strengths, which can take advantage of each other. For example, Adelaide University has a sustainable green transition signature research theme, multidisciplinary research in energy, biodiversity, and climate resilience, real innovation hubs for place-based solutions (VR, AR, mixed reality/3D and 2D content/etc), advanced capabilities in green finance, law, and entrepreneurship.

Meanwhile, NEU is an expert in economic policy and environmental governance, and has strong links to government and industry for policy translation. Besides that, it focuses on training future leaders in sustainability and economics, and has emerging research in climate finance, urban sustainability, and low-carbon governance.

“The Adelaide University and NEU, on August 13, formalised a partnership that will see our institutions collaborate across research and academic endeavours, with a joint vision to advance sustainable futures in the Asia-Pacific region. This partnership is underpinned by wider Australian government initiatives, including the national energy workforce strategy, which aims to cultivate the skills and capabilities required for the global transition to net zero,” said Prof. David Lloyd, co-vice chancellor of Adelaide University.

“Vietnam is Adelaide University’s third largest international cohort for commencing students and third largest for total enrolled international award students. Our new institution benefits from the merged metrics of the esteemed University of Adelaide and the enterprising University of South Australia,” Lloyd said.
