The International School Ho Chi Minh City combines academic excellence with character development, empowering students to become confident leaders and compassionate global citizens.

Through its inquiry-based learning approach, the International School Ho Chi Minh City (ISHCMC) encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and a global mindset. Students are equipped with strong academic foundations and the skills to lead, collaborate, and adapt, preparing them to succeed in an increasingly fast-changing world.

Inquiry-based learning: Preparing ISHCMC students for the future

Inquiry-based learning at ISHCMC makes students active participants in their education, encouraging them to ask questions, explore real-world problems, and discover answers independently rather than simply memorising facts. Deputy head of school Tosca Killoran describes it as, “the spark behind a love of learning.”

For instance, when learning about fish migration, students don't just read about it – they visit the river to collect data and observe the fish in real life. This hands-on approach enhances their learning and helps them retain the information more effectively. Inquiry-based learning also aligns with international academic standards like AERO and ACARA, ensuring students receive a high-quality education.

Traditional education often focuses on memorising facts and repeating them back to teachers. In contrast, inquiry-based learning focuses on exploring high-level questions and solving real-world problems.

Teachers at ISHCMC act as guides, helping students dive deeper into topics by asking thought-provoking questions and encouraging independent research. This method helps students learn more effectively while developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

This approach also helps students develop leadership skills. As students work on projects and explore new ideas, they naturally take on leadership roles, learning to communicate effectively, collaborate with others, and solve problems together.

"Leadership is an essential part of the learning process at ISHCMC, and students get the chance to practice leadership skills in and out of the classroom," said Killoran.

For example, ISHCMC students are encouraged to take part in extracurricular activities such as sports, clubs, and even global citizenship projects. Through these activities, they practice leadership, learn time management, and become more confident in their abilities.

Inquiry-based learning: Preparing ISHCMC students for the future

One of the key goals of inquiry-based learning is to prepare students to be responsible global citizens. With a student body representing over 60 nationalities, ISHCMC provides a unique environment where students can learn about different cultures, global issues, and how to collaborate across borders.

By working on projects that address global challenges, students develop empathy, communication skills, and an understanding of different perspectives. They also have the chance to connect with students from around the world, learning how to navigate a global society and contribute positively to the world.

While inquiry-based learning is often praised for its interactive and hands-on approach, it is also designed to be academically rigorous.

ISHCMC students regularly outperform global averages on tests like the International Baccalaureate, Diploma Programme, and the Measure of Academic Progress tests. This method helps students to not just understand the material but also prepares them to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts, setting the stage for success in university and beyond.

The school, with its diverse student body of over 60 nationalities, offers a broad range of extracurricular activities, including 95+ After-School Activities and more than 25 advanced programmes.

ISHCMC’s counselling services have supported 98 per cent of students in gaining admission to their top-choice universities in 2025. In terms of academic achievement, 57 per cent of ISHCMC students earn a bilingual diploma in up to 10 languages, significantly higher than the global average of 23 per cent.

Many ISHCMC graduates also secure spots at top universities worldwide, including institutions like Harvard, Yale, and the University of Chicago.

As an outstanding student at ISHCMC, Danichiro Kudo-Ivanov (Danko) has been part of the community for five years since transferring from an international school in Kenya.

“These years of my life are very important, they shape the person I'm going to be in the future,” said Danko.

From the very beginning, he was impressed by the learning environment that encourages questioning, sharing perspectives, and self-directed exploration. Danko quickly adapted, achieved excellent academic results, and actively participated in activities such as Model United Nations and the Student Leadership Council.

These experiences have helped him cultivate leadership skills, independent thinking, and adaptability in a multicultural setting. Danko’s story is a testament to the value of a student-centred learning environment, where students can gain knowledge and grow holistically.
