The objectives of the projects are to increase the peak capacity of the national power system, maximise the annual excess water discharge during the rainy season to generate electricity, and improve the frequency control and frequency stabilisation capabilities of the national power system, contributing to reducing operating costs.

The project will also help reduce the workload on existing generators, thereby extending the life of equipment, saving maintenance and repair costs.
