A rise in foreign direct investment in the north and central regions is benefiting DHL Global Forwarding. The company last week officially expanded its office in Hanoi to serve as DHL Global Forwarding’s headquarters.
Hanoi and neighbouring northern provinces of Hai Duong, Haiphong, Bac Ninh are attracting accelerating levels of foreign direct investment, securing 200 new projects in the first nine months of 2011 worth $3.3 billion. “DHL’s investment in Vietnam doesn’t end here,” said Clement Blanc, country manager of DHL Global Forwarding Vietnam.
He said the future plans include launching an office in southern Vung Tau city to support Vietnam’s developing oil and energy sector, in Danang city to enable economic development in central Vietnam and in Haiphong port city to support shipping operations in the north.
“DHL Global Forwarding will have the complete coverage needed to serve our customers effectively across Vietnam with these new offices planned for the first half of 2012,” added Blanc. DHL began operations in Vietnam in 1988 and currently employees close to 1,000 staff to service over 7,000 customers.
So far, there are around 1,000 logistics companies are operating in Vietnam, according to DHL’s statistics. Among of them, 18 per cent are state-owned enterprises, 70 per cent are private companies, 2 per cent are foreign-invested companies and 10 per cent are non-registered ones.
The logistics industry contributed from 18-20 per cent of Vietnam’s gross domestic product in 2010. Also in 2010, DHL estimates total costs for logistics in Vietnam was around $3.2 billion, up 12.4 per cent year-on-year.
