Dr. Nguyen Hong Trung, medical director of AIH |
What prompted AIH to partner with Raffles Hospital Singapore in establishing AIH Orthopaedic Centre?
AIH, as a comprehensive general hospital, recognises the rising prevalence of musculoskeletal and spinal conditions. To address this, the AIH board of directors has set a strategic goal to develop the orthopaedic department into a specialised treatment centre of regional excellence.
Raffles Hospital Singapore, a longstanding partner of AIH across multiple areas, boasts a well-established orthopaedic department equipped with a team of highly experienced specialists and state-of-the-art medical equipment. Through this collaboration, AIH aims to offer patients in Vietnam high-quality, advanced orthopaedic care that meets regional standards, all at reasonable costs.
How will the collaboration between AIH and Raffles Hospital Singapore be implemented at AIH Orthopaedic Centre?
Top experts from Raffles Hospital Singapore will collaborate closely with AIH doctors to consult and determine the optimal treatment approaches for each patient. This partnership extends to the exchange of the latest treatment methodologies and cutting-edge patient management strategies through workshops and online medical conferences.
What cutting-edge technologies and treatment methods are being adopted at AIH Orthopaedic Centre?
AIH Orthopaedic Centre will implement advanced treatment methods for musculoskeletal disorders that combine both surgical and non-surgical approaches, including minimally invasive surgery to reduce pain and facilitate rapid recovery, as well as physical therapy and multimodal pain management.
AIH is equipped with modern machinery, including digital x-rays, AI-integrated CT/MRI systems, 3D printing, navigation systems, and robotic technology to enhance accuracy in diagnosis and treatment, tailoring care to individual patients to achieve optimal outcomes.
How many patients can AIH Orthopaedic Centre treat each day? What ensures patients feel secure about undergoing surgery?
AIH is equipped with modern operating rooms |
The AIH Orthopaedic Centre has the capacity to examine and treat up to 100 musculoskeletal patients daily. For cases requiring surgery, patients benefit from advanced treatment methods performed by our experienced specialists at both AIH and Raffles Hospital Singapore.
The operating rooms meet international standards and are certified by JCI, with modern equipment capable of handling all types of Orthopaedic surgery. We utilise the latest Karl Storz endoscopy equipment for arthroscopic procedures, along with ceiling-mounted cameras for direct consultations with doctors from other countries.
Thanks to the support of modern equipment along with highly experienced medical team from Raffles Hospital Singapore, what types of complex diseases can AIH Orthopaedic Centre handle?
We have the capability to perform complex operations such as intricate fractures of major joints, osteoarthritis, and joint deformities in elderly patients with multiple comorbidities. Additionally, we address congenital and acquired deformities in both children and adults, as well as rehabilitation of injuries resulting from sports injuries. For example, we successfully treated a 28-year-old patient with congenital clubfoot. The surgery required advanced techniques to avoid damaging blood vessels and nerves, providing the patient with new legs and renewed quality of life.
AIH also has experience in limb lengthening for individuals with short stature, bone loss, and limb length discrepancies by using advanced techniques based on the improved Ilizarov principle, which optimises anatomical structure with the desired limb lengthening. Recently, we successfully treated an over-80-year-old Vietnamese expatriate from Australia who suffered a motorcycle accident resulting in an open fracture of the leg, losing a segment of the distal tibia and suffering from multi-drug-resistant infections. Despite being advised to undergo limb amputation in Australia, he chose AIH for treatment. After nearly 10 surgeries, we successfully extended the lost bone (8 cm), preserving his leg.
In 2025, we plan to offer consultations, treatments, and surgeries for spinal conditions such as congenital and acquired scoliosis, multi-level disc herniation, vertebral augmentation, cement injection and Vis CBT tripod fixation with navigation systems.
Vietnam ranks among the top countries with the highest rates of musculoskeletal disorders. As an international hospital, how does AIH contribute to the healthcare sector in addressing this issue by implementing various initiatives?
We will organise educational programmes for patients regarding musculoskeletal disorders, promoting healthy lifestyles with a calcium-rich diet and appropriate physical activities tailored to their health status and age.
AIH provides comprehensive health management packages, including musculoskeletal care, and organises specialised classes tailored to various age groups and health conditions. Additionally, our in-depth screening programmes will offer suitable treatment options for different patient demographics.
