Guided by the company’s Human Cities Initiative, the project will provide a splash of colour and inspiration to refresh the learning space for these schools and help inspire Vietnamese pupils to study and develop.

AkzoNobel hopes to reach out to as many as 100 schools in three years. In 2017, AkzoNobel Vietnam is already on its way to fulfil its commitment to revitalise and give a facelift to 20 schools by sponsoring more than35,000 litres of innovative exterior and interior paint from the Dulux and Maxilite portfolio to repaint old and dilapidated walls in schools.

The schools identified for this project are those in disadvantaged areas with visible degradation and lack of funds to renovate. AkzoNobel believes that all students deserve a clean, spacious, and inspiring studying environment as part of AkzoNobel’s continuous efforts to help foster a colourful and sustainable community in Vietnam.

The company’s pledge also resonates with its 350 Vietnamese employees who have spent over 2800 hours in community service to complete these 20 schools themselves.

The colour palette used for these schools depended on the function of the rooms. For example for classrooms, primarily warm hues like earth brown, pale white or yellow were used to make the space seem wider and help pupils to reduce stress and enhance their attention during class.

Chau Ngoc Tuan, the principal of Kim Dong Secondary School in Quang Nam province, said: “We are so delighted to receive such great support from AkzoNobel Paints Vietnam. The dream of a new learning environment for our teachers and pupils has become true. Moreover, we are deeply impressed by the fact that AkzoNobel’s employees directly joined in recoating the school. I believe that the spacious, clean, and friendly studying space will lend students more power in the new school year. We highly appreciate AkzoNobel Vietnam’s contribution to our school.”

AkzoNobel’s employee involvement in community building in Vietnam has been demonstrated through various other programmes, such as the “Green Volunteer Summer Campaign 2017” which beautified selected alleys and streets in Ho Chi Minh City by going through 2,700 litres of paint and One Community Day– “AkzoNobel Sharing Love” where AkzoNobel Vietnam employees volunteered to repaint school facilities, provided necessary equipment and water filtration systems to improve the lives of disabled people, orphans, and single elderly people.

“To us, business is sustainability and sustainability is business. Sustainable development is one of the most critical core values at AkzoNobel that is present in our every business and community activity. With the mission of making life more liveable and inspiring, AkzoNobel hopes that our contribution will inspire the community to bringing positive values to society,” said Pamela Phua, general manager of AkzoNobel Paints Vietnam.
