After perusing a flower market, Kieu Dai Gia, a businessman, decided to spend VND1 billion (nearly $43,500) buying two pots of orchids to display at his house for Tet. According to Gia, the Lunar New Year is the most special festival of the year and flowers are a highlight in his home.

“Visiting the flower markets with my family as the New Year approaches is a great pleasure, I can feel that Tet is drawing near. Besides, it helps me relax after a year of hard work. There are a great variety of flowers on the market, including imported ones, but I still prefer traditional flowers. Along with these two pots of orchids, I will buy a cherry blossom tree and a kumquat tree,” he said.

About a month before Tet, the flower markets across the country become busier and more crowded. Hanoi is famous for growing a wide variety of flowers in beautiful villages like Nhat Tan, Nghi Tam, Quang Ba, and Tay Tuu. Many street corners and markets in Hanoi such as Hang Luoc and Quang Ba have also become popular flower markets. Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City is famous for Ho Thi Ky and Dam Sen.

The Quang Ba wholesale flower market on Nghi Tam is perhaps the most popular flower market in Hanoi and is particularly popular during Tet. The flowers at this market come from Tay Tuu, Dong Anh, Gia Lam, and Phuc Yen-Vinh Phuc. The market opens very early in the morning, between 3 and 4 AM, and offers a huge variety of flowers like chrysanthemums, roses, lilies, carnations, orchids, and more.

Huynh Ngoc visited the market a few days ago, and said that during this time of the year, the Quang Ba flower market is a very popular destination among Hanoians. In the market, there are many exotic flowers from the south and from Dalat. Peach blossoms, kumquat trees, yellow apricots, carnations, and peonies are all here and are on sale at reasonable prices.

“A flower vase will make your house more pleasant during Tet. Peach blossoms signal the arrival of spring, kumquat trees represent reunion, and lilies are great to brighten the Tet atmosphere,” Ngoc said.

Vietnamese people go to flower markets, not only to buy flowers, but also to enjoy the markets’ atmosphere. Besides, it is an occasion for girls and families to take beautiful photos.

Celebrity Thuy Hang said, “Flower gardens are very beautiful. So many girls take to the streets wearing an ao dai to take photos in the flower gardens, and every year my friends and I visit the Quang Ba flower market to take pictures. These are the most beautiful photos in all of my albums.”
