As an idea-crowdsourcing contest, SCGP Packaging Speak Out 2022 - Vietnam successfully delivered a playground that inspired the younger generation to speak out when imagining, shaping, and curating a better world.

The final welcomed hundreds of attendees, both offline and online, via the SCG Vietnam fanpage. Hosting this programme is a part of SCGP’s continuous efforts to promote sustainability where it operates, aligning with its corporate strategy of the circular economy and ESG.

Sompob Witworrasakul, chief regional officer at SCGP shared, “One of our approaches to innovation and sustainability is having the commitment and determination to bring new perspectives and developments in packaging design. Organising SCGP Packaging Speak Out 2022 in Vietnam for the second consecutive year is part of our initiative to encourage young people to show their creativity and provide a platform where their potential in design can shine through.”

“SCGP believes that the future belongs to this younger generation, whose members are going to build and create tomorrow’s society. This is why we named the project SCGP Packaging Speak Out 2022 to let them speak out and change the world through their packaging designs,” he added.

Amongst the 11 finalists, team QIN from Van Lang university was named the winner with their unique idea for Mooncake packaging design. Team Magic Cat from the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education was the runner-up with the creative idea of Jelly Zoo packaging.

The winning design from team QIN explored the challenge of upgrading packaging by understanding the needs of consumers, turning the familiar Mooncake box into handy lanterns that can be used as traditional toys during the Mid-Autumn Festival and other parts that can be used as eating utensils or stationary afterwards.

Meanwhile, team Magic Cat aimed to tackle the issue of packaging waste by taking advantage of jelly boxes after use to make a set of creative games for children. They are both noteworthy possibilities for customers and packaging manufacturers.

A representative of the winning team QIN shared, “We are surprised and truly honoured to be awarded the highest prize. In the beginning, our team joined this competition seeking more of a playground for creativity, rather than a race for merit. However, this competition turned out to be much more fruitful than we expected as we learned a lot from design experts and our fellow competitors. Nowadays, our young generation cares a lot about environmental issues and climate change and we truly appreciate great opportunities like this to spread the message of protecting the Earth.”

Tran Quang Tung (Tung Juno), CEO and creative director at RIO Creative Vietnam – one of the judges since the first competition last year – enjoyed grading this year’s ideas.

“Competitions like SCGP Packaging Speak Out 2022 - Vietnam are a great platform for young Vietnamese designers to showcase their talents and contribute ideas for change in industries and communities. The finalists this year gave me a pleasant headache with their quality of work. They have designed very ingeniously and methodically. With this year's design question, all the teams had to explore consumers’ insights, understand emerging needs in the market, and strategically drive their ideas to meet the customers' demands. Similar to the previous year, local cultural inspirations are cleverly employed.”

SCGP Packaging Speak Out 2022 - Vietnam has become a local think-tank for packaging design. Besides the two winning entries, other finalists also offered practical suggestions to shift the industry toward a more circular approach.

Future designers prioritised the use of environmentally friendly paper and ink materials to increase sustainability. This is a step forwards in improving the user experience and optimising production resources. With the quality of ideas gathered in the last two years, the programme has motivated SCGP to facilitate future activities to promote the discussion of sustainable packaging in Vietnam and across the region.
