Super typhoon about to enter East Sea, heading for Vietnam

Following the depression that hit southeastern Vietnam last night, Super Typhoon Haiyan is moving towards the Philippines and will slash the country before entering the East Sea and heading for Central Vietnam, the National Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Center reported.


At 4 am today, November 7, the super typhoon was centered at 8.4 degrees latitude north and 133.6 degrees longitude east, about 780 km off the region from the Philippines’s Mindanao Island, with winds near the eye reaching  up to 221 kph, the National Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Center reported.

The typhoon is moving between west and northwest at a speed of about 30 kph and at 4 pm Friday, it will be centered at 10.7 degrees latitude north and 127.0 degrees longitude east in the waters southeast of the above coastal region, packing winds of the same strength.

At 4 am Saturday, the typhoon will be seen about 600 km east-northeast of Song Tu Tay Island, part of the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago, with winds in areas near the eye measuring up to 183 kph and with gusts of over 220 kph. 

In the next 48 hours, the typhoon will continue to move between west and west-northwest at 30-35 kph, towards mid-central Vietnam.

According to a report from the US Navy’s Warning Center, last night Haiyan last night packed winds of up to 260 kph and squalls of 315 kph.

Meanwhile, the Japan Meteorological Agency released the lower figures, saying the typhoon had winds of 204 kph and gust of 287 kph. 
   
Currently the Philippines are preparing for the super typhoon which is expected to hit the country tomorrow and authorities have urged citizens to brace for the worse. 

According to EarthSky, Haiyan will hit the Philippines on Friday around 0-6 UTC, and the Joint Typhoon Warning Center believes this storm will still be a powerful Category 4 storm with sustained winds around 145 mph when it hits.
