Residents living near the Dung Quat Economic Zone in central Vietnam have blocked the garbage disposal company Lilama EME Dung Quat from operating to protest the construction of a rubbish dump just 1.5km from their residential area.

The blockage has left hundreds of tons of industrial and household garbage stagnant in the economic zone and surrounding areas for many days because dump trucks cannot enter the area.

Residents of Binh Son District in Quang Ngai Province and Nui Thanh District in Quang Nam Province, who have been badly affected by the new rubbish dump, said the dump should have been at least 2.5km away from residential areas.

Pham Nhu So, vice chairman of the Quang Ngai People’s Committee and head of the management board of Dung Quat EZ, said the short-term solution is to move the stagnant garbage to the new Dong Na dump in Binh Son District.

In the long term, a new site will be built to solve the issue.

So added that four locations have been selected for the construction of a new garbage dump, but they have all been protested against by local residents.

“Whatever happens, we will have a new garbage dump in three months,” he confirmed.

The Lilama EME Dung Quat garbage disposal unit is able to process 30 tons of household garbage and three tons of dangerous industrial garbage a day.
