MHI leads way for local distributed generation

Established in 2007 in the suburbs of Ho Chi Minh City, the company has 60 employees, producing around 50 generator sets a month.

The equipment produced at MHI Engine System Vietnam Co., Ltd. (MHIES-V) has up to now mainly been used as emergency generators for buildings, but currently attention is turning more towards “distributed power generation.”

The conventional system for generating electricity is mass, centralised production at large-scale thermal, hydroelectric, or nuclear power plants, with distribution throughout the country over power cables. Recently, however, local production and use of energy has been attracting attention. Specifically, this involves installing megawatt-class generators for small-unit electricity consumption at the town or village level.

The former method is known as “centralised generation” while the latter is called “distributed generation”. Distributed generation offers the advantages of compact facilities, less transmission loss, and utilisation of the heat produced during generation.

On May 9, 2016, a new Global Statement summarised the value that MHI Group provides to the global community, under the tagline “Move the world forward”. These initiatives are intended to deepen the understanding of MHI Group in the global market and raise levels of awareness.

In Vietnam, MHI Group has been involved in a good deal of business, such as electricity generation equipment and steel-making machinery. In addition to Ho Chi Minh City diesel engine firm MHIES-V, MHI opened the commercial aircraft firm MHI Aerospace Vietnam Co., Ltd. (MHIVA) in Hanoi in 2007, and established a representative office of Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) - dealing in thermal power generation equipment - in November 2016.

MHI is engaged in diversified operations in rapidly-industrialising Vietnam. MHI Group has supplied machinery to Phu My, a highly-efficient gas turbine combined cycle power plant, which produces 1,090 megawatts of electricity. With its outstanding operational performance, this plant contributes to the promotion of economic development in the country.

Another key ingredient for social infrastructure development is steel. MHI Group also supplies cold-rolled as well as hot-rolled steel production machinery to local firms in Vietnam.

MHI Group has also contributed to the capacity development of young people in Vietnam, the drivers of their country’s future, through joint initiatives such as setting up an endowed chair in nuclear and aerospace engineering from 2009 in the Hanoi University of Science and Technology, and from 2010 at the Electric Power University, co-operating with the development of human resources for the future.

MHI Group intends to continue building bridges between Vietnam and Japan and contributing to Vietnam’s economic development in the medium and long term.
