The driver of a car who fled after causing a traffic accident that killed a 51-year-old Dane in Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday has given himself up to police.

The Road and Railway Traffic Police Division under the municipal Department of Police on Sunday said Truong Thuan Thanh, a 22-year-old man living in District 2, had turned himself in to police two days after the accident that killed Walther Bilde.

Thanh admitted to police officers that he was the driver of the car involved in the deadly crash.

He is a student who is studying abroad and returned to Vietnam about a month ago, police said.

The accident occurred at 1:30 am on Saturday, when Thanh’s vehicle hit the foreign man’s motorbike as they were traveling at the intersection of Mai Chi Tho Boulevard and the road that leads to the Thu Thiem Bridge in District 2.

As shown in the footage recorded by a traffic surveillance camera, Thanh’s car left the scene immediately after it collided with Bilde’s bike.

The foreigner fell off his motorcycle to the ground and suffered a head injury.

Locals took him to Gia Dinh People’s Hospital in nearby Binh Thanh District but the Dane later succumbed to his serious wound.
