As of March 15, all officials working at agencies under the Hoi An City Party Committee in Quang Nam Province will bicycle to their workplaces, the City Party Committee Office has announced.

The activity was initiated by Hoi An City Party Committee’s secretary Nguyen Su as part of the city’s effort to protect the environment.

The city People’s Committee will also mobilize people to use bicycles for traveling around the ancient town from April 1.

Meanwhile, officials of local cultural agencies have been using the bicycle as their daily means to work for years.

Since 2003, the city has made efforts to protect the environment by launching other programs like pedestrian streets and “no motorized engine” streets and received positive responses from tourists.

Early this month, the Prime Minister gave the approval to 5 big cities Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Da Nang and Can Tho to implement a pilot project to provide public bicycle service in the cities’ downtown areas. The project has collected mixed opinions.

Some consider it a good step to raise people’s awareness on protecting the environment while others say it’s hard to carry on such a plan since the motorbike has been a long-time habit as well as a very convenient way to travel around the big cities.
