
The 52-year-old official was held for violating article 275 of the Vietnam’s penal code relating to the organization of fleeing from Vietnam, according to the investigation security unit under the Ministry of Public Security.
Trong was charged ‘a major link’ of the case to help Dung escape from Vietnam before police arrest in September last year. Dung involved in a corruption case when he was in the seat of chairman of the state-owned Vietnam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines).
Trong becomes the sixth official being arrested for helping Dung escape Vietnam. Other detainees include four policemen of the northern city of Hai Phong.
Trong grows up in Hai Phong, graduated from Hanoi Polytechnic University and worked for Hai Phong police department after graduation. He was holding positions as chief of criminal police department and deputy director of police department in Hai Phong.
Dung, 56, was arrested in a Southeast Asian nation following an international wanted notice for alleged economic offenses when he was board chairman of the Vinalines.
Dung was later extradited to Vietnam by the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) and charged with “intentionally flouting state regulations on economic management, leading to serious consequences”.
