Hanoi turns purple with crape myrtle flowers

In May, Hanoi streets are decorated with the bright purple tones of giant crape-myrtle flowers, known as Bang Lang in Vietnamese.

The giant crape-myrtle is a native plant of India, hence its other name, Pride of India.

Crape myrtle has been grown in many places in Hanoi.

The flower has been considered the symbol of the capital city, signalling the arrival of summer.
