Former German striker Karl-Heinz Riedle arrived in Vietnam on Thursday as a representative of Borussia Dortmund to discuss the chance for the club to establish a football academy in the Southeast Asian nation.

Nicknamed ‘The Air” over his strong ability in fighting for the ball in the air, Riedle scored two goals in Dortmund’s 3-1 win over Juventus to claim their only UEFA Champions League trophy in the final match of the 1996-97 season.

“Dortmund has been planning on the construction of a football academy in Vietnam for a long time,” the 50-year-old former international said.

Dortmund has a good trademark in Vietnam, where they have a fan club and a Facebook fanpage, he said.

The Bundesliga club built an academy in Japan three years ago and are now planning on others in Vietnam and Malaysia, Riedle added.

Riedle played 207 matches at Bundesliga and scored 72 goals. He also played for Lazio and Liverpool.

He is scheduled to stay in Vietnam until October 23 before flying to China for a Bundesliga Legends Tour.
