The debris was found floating near the reported crash site of the Malaysian jet, some 90 kilometers south of Vietnam’s Tho Chu Island.

Local media reported Saturday that oil slicks were spotted near the island but rescuers later confirmed that they turned out to be a coral reef.

Vietnam’s DHC 6 seaplane took a photograph of the floating debris at 18:30 Sunday local time, but the picture was unclear due to darkness.

The Vietnamese ships are expected to reach the floating debris this morning to confirm whether it is a window or door of the aircraft that went missing early Saturday.

Vietnamese search and rescue authorities have informed their Singaporean and Malaysian counterparts of the suspect object.

Vietnam also sent more ships and helicopters to search at the site early Monday.

The Malaysia Airlines plane MH370 has been reported to crash 53 nautical miles (275km) off the island, which is located 85 nautical miles (153km) off Ca Mau – Vietnam’s southernmost province.

It was carrying 239 people, including 227 passengers and 12 crew when it disappeared on Saturday around 1:30 am Malaysian time (1730 GMT Friday), about one hour after leaving Kuala Lumpur for Beijing, AFP reported.

Vietnam and other Asian countries have mobilized many ships, choppers, and aircraft to conduct a search and rescue mission in an attempt to find the Malaysia Airlines jetliner.

But neither plane wreckage nor casualties have been confirmed so far.
