The accident occurred while the bus was crossing the Hon Giao Mountain Pass.

Initial investigations were blaming brake failure, said Nguyen Xuan Chanh, chief of the Secretariat of Khanh Hoa Province's Traffic Safety Committee.

If the bus had kept going another 10 metres, it would have plunged into the abyss, so the driver drove the vehicle straight into the cliff, he said.

The bus was carrying teachers from Hoa Phuoc 2 Primary School in Da Nang on a day-trip.

The injured were taken to Khanh Vinh District General Hospital and Khanh Hoa Province General Hospital.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has sent an urgent message asking the province to give emergency aid for victims and support for their families while making efforts to settle the consequences of the accident.

On the same day, chairman of the province's people's committee Nguyen Chien Thang visited the victims and their families and presented each of them with VND2 million (US$95).

The Ministry of Public Security has been given the responsibility of finding the cause of the tragedy.

The Ministry of Transport and people's committees of Khanh Hoa and Lam Dong have also been instructed to take quick and effective measures to improve safety on the stretch of road.

They are also responsible for ensuring regular vehicle inspections are conducted, especially on coaches.

All this was aimed at preventing the same thing from happening again, according to the message.
