Vietnam wins first medal at World Gymnastics Champs

Twenty-year-old Phan Thi Ha Thanh won a bronze medal in the pommel horse event at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in the Japanese capital city of Tokyo on October 15.

This is the first time Vietnam has grabbed a medal at this championship though its athletes have entered the final round for the second time.

In the competition with eight gymnasts from the US, Russia, Brazil and Germany, Thanh came third with 14,666 points, compared to 15,300 points and 14,733 points, respectively of the gold and silver winners.

The young athlete from Hai Phong city also pocketed two silver medals at the World Cup event in 2010.
