The 2013 National First Class Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) Championships officially kicked off at Phu Tho Gymnasium, in Ho Chi Minh City on February 27.

The tournament drew the participation of 71 players from across the country including Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Binh Duong province and Da Nang.

The participants, including 46 men and 25 women, will battle it out following the Swiss system, with seven rounds for both men and women, to decide the top 16 outstanding players. The outstanding players will then compete to select two winners for each category.

The championships will last until March 7.

The nine-day event provides a good opportunity for Vietnam’s xiangqi players to hone their skills and compete for national team selection for the 2013 international xiangqi competitions.
