Vietnam remain third on SEA Games table with 87 golds

The Vietnamese contingent on Sunday maintained their third position in the medal tally at the ongoing Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia, clinching 87 golds by the end of the day.

They had won 87 golds, 83 silvers and 89 bronzes by 11 pm, coming third after hosts Indonesia and Thailand, respectively.

In the men’s rapid chess, grand master Le Quang Liem clinched one gold medal. Following him, Pham Le Thao Nguyen also took home one gold in the women’s rapid chess. In addition, Ms. Bao Tram earned one silver.

Vietnam’s kempo martial arts team secured three golds Sunday. The gold medalists were Do Hong Ngoc and Le Thi Thu Hang in the women’s 45 kg and 54 kg categories, and Nguyen Ba Tan in the men’s 50 kg category.

In the last day of judo competitions, Vietnam’s Dang Hao knocked out his Thai opponent Teerawat Homklin in the final match of the 100 kg category to win one gold.

At the end of the day, four women divers – Dang Thi Huyen Trang, Vo Thi Thanh Vy, Tran Thi Quynh and Vo Thi Dai Trang – clinched one gold in the 4x100m diving event. It was the seventh gold medal for Vietnam Sunday.

In football, Vietnam’s under-23 squad will take on the Myanmar side at 4 pm in Jakarta to compete for the bronze medal. Then defending champions Malaysia will play hosts Indonesia for the gold.

The 26th SEA Games closing ceremony is due to take place Tuesday.
